Venue Description: The Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens is an educational and recreational resource for residents of Fairfield County and beyond. The 91-acre property is a living museum of majestic trees, rare plant collections, charming gardens, and varied natural habitats and landscapes traversed by hiking and walking trails. It offers community year-round educational programs for all ages, an extensive horticultural library, an herbarium with specimens dating back to the 1800s, a summer plant clinic, and seasonal events and family festivals. The Arboretum is a living museum of over 850 specimen trees and plants displayed in several distinct natural habitats, including woodlands, wetlands, meadows, and in formal gardens. A primary goal of the Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens is to create, sustain, and interpret this collection of rare and unusual trees and plants from around the world and to provide a place where visitors of all ages can immerse themselves in the exceptional beauty of these collections, and learn about horticulture and the environment through personal discovery and exploration. The Bartlett Visitor Center, once the home of noted dendrologist Dr. Francis A. Bartlett, is open Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm, and is closed on national holidays. The Visitor Center houses a horticulture resource library, Arboretum staff offices, a small gallery that features a variety of art exhibits, and a plant clinic open during the growing season. Professionals in various botany and horticulture fields provide adult lectures and tours of the gardens. There are also educational opportunities for preschool and elementary-aged children, along with numerous weekend family programs. Educational guided walking tours include their Nature Walk series, Rare Tree tour, and Gardens In Bloom. These tours are designed to appeal to families with children of all ages, and avid or occasional gardeners. The Arboretum's original purpose when used as the headquarters of the Bartlett Tree Company in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was to perform cutting-edge research. Since 2006, the Bartlett Arboretum has revitalized research as a part of its daily activities, and staff members at the Bartlett have published several scientific papers. Today, the Arboretum's research program falls into several categories including floristics, plant ecology, and invasive species. The Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens is not handicapped-accessible. It is located at 151 Brookdale Rd in Stamford, CT. For more information, call 203-322-6971 or visit www.bartlettarboretum.org.
