Venue Description: The Beardsley Zoo has a proud history of over 80 years as Connecticut?s only zoo. As an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and a participant in its Species Survival Plan (SSP) programs, the Beardsley Zoo is committed to the preservation of endangered animals and is actively developing strategies that will protect species and preserve their wild habitats. It showcases more than 300 animals representing primarily North and South American species, including many that are endangered and threatened, such as the Amur (Siberian) tiger, Andean condor, ocelot, Red wolf, Andean (spectacled) bear, Maned wolf, and Golden Lion tamarin. Check out the South American rainforest exhibit with its free-flight aviary, the walk-through prairie dog exhibit with "pop-up" viewing areas, and the New England Farmyard, with goats, cows, pigs, sheep, and other barnyard critters. The Hoofstock Trail features bison, pronghorn, deer and more. The Zoo plans fun and educational special events all year. Animal Encounters are short (20-30 minutes) presentations aimed at enhancing a school?s field trip to the Zoo. Students meet one or two live animals, see bio-facts, and learn ?insider? tips to help them enjoy their visit even more. For educators, the Zoomobiles, Animal Encounters, and Professor Beardsley Workshops are the most popular. For home school groups, Animal Encounters, Crafty Zoo Kids, and Professor Beardsley Workshops work well. There are family programs all year long. All of these activities offer a unique opportunity for education through up-close observation and animal contact. The Beardsley Zoo is situated on 52 lush acres in Beardsley Park, providing a natural setting for private events in its indoor and outdoor facilities. Families can find refreshments at the Peacock Café, relax at the Picnic Grove, and enjoy a carousel ride.
